Socorro Plaza |
||
Old West towns were often built around a central plaza. The plaza would provide a place where the community as a whole could get together. Socorro has a wonderful example of this time-honored tradition, dating back to the earliest days of settlement.
Time has moved on, and the plaza is not the hub of City operations anymore, but there is still plenty of reason to check it out. In or immediately surrounding the plaza are some of the oldest buildings still standing in Socorro, including one that now houses a micro-brewery restaurant. In the middle of the plaza stands a large gazeebo, surrounded by towering Cottonwood trees and benches.
Every Saturday morning a Farmer's Market takes place at the plaza, providing a wealth of local produce and baked goods. Many years, the Farmer's Market also is held on Sunday morning during the Fat Tire Fiesta. Just the thing if you're looking for some breakfast, or some food to take along on a ride! Many years, the Farmer's Market also is held on Sunday morning during the Fat Tire Fiesta.
Take I-25 to exit 150, marked Socorro. At the traffic light, the offramp becomes California Street, the main strip in Socorro. Go straight on California Street until the fifth traffic light, marked Manzanares. Turn right onto Manzanares. You will see the plaza in front of you. The plaza is a one-way street, flowing counterclockwise. Park anywhere along the street, or in one of the side lots.
