SSR Meeting Minutes (2003-02-04)

  1. Members Robert Abernathy, Mark Bottjer, Camille Scielzi, Fred Yarger, Cathy Perini, Matt Perini, and Bill Brundage were present. APAS President Jackie Kraft was a guest. The meeting was held at the public library meeting room, at 6PM, on February 4, 2003.

  2. Awards for the Shelter Shuffle were discussed. APAS will be placing the order, but they would like SSR to choose the awards. We chose a 10" single post trophy for first place in each 5K category, a 2.75" medal for second place, and a 1.5" medal for third place. Simple participant ribbons are to be given to all participants in the 5K and the walk. Special gifts will be given for pets in several categories, including best pet name, best dressed pet, and best pet lookalike.

The event brochures are complete and are being distributed. The February 19th issue of El Defensor Chieftain will feature the APAS Pet Page, including information about the Shelter Shuffle.

    Action items:

  3. Robert suggested that we hold a spring handicap series. He's planning a series of 4 races: 1 5K, and 3 10K's, to be held before the end of the spring semester. The members present voiced their favor, and Robert will finalize plans.

  4. The Swim-a-thon, a fundraiser for the Relay for Life, is still being planned, however, Matt still hasn't contacted the Tech administration to see if we can get the Tech pool donated for a Saturday morning. The members agreed that if we do have to rent the pool, we should pay no more than about $75.

  5. Laura Wilcox has organized a weekend beginner's ride for her triathlon class, and has asked for it to be listed on the web site. Cathy re-raised the question of whether guests on club rides are covered by our ACA insurance. Matt didn't know, and will contact the ACA to clarify.

  6. Matt is occasionally contacted by businesses who want to advertise on the SSR website, and he requested a discussion and policy decision on the matter. It is possible that SSR could generate a small amount of revenue. On the other hand, putting the advertisement up could be construed as an endorsement of their product. The members present voted unanimously against allowing advertisements.

  7. The lining of Socorro City Pool will be rebuilt this spring, and if additional damage is not found, the city expects the pool to open by mid-June. The members agreed that although the triathlon (August 9) is at risk, we should go ahead with plans, however, costs should be held to a minimum to reduce the risk. If the pool is closed for the race date, we will hold a duathlon.

  8. The Fat Tire Fiesta will soon hold a "brainstorming session" in order to come up with a set of rides for this year's event. Suggestions for rides should go to fattire@socorro.com. An art contest is being announced, and the winner will receive a $100 prize.

  9. The scheduling of the Hwy 60 cleanup is postponed to the April meeting.

  10. The singletrack maintenance day is set for March 1. Brad Cromey and his extreme cycling students will help.

  11. Robert is planning a mountain bike rally in the April timeframe modeled on a motorcycle run or car rally, where the riders will start with a set of pictures and try to go to the sites the pictures were taken from. This is basically a non-competitive event, and could be very kid- or family-oriented. The members were pretty excited about it, and look forward to more details from Robert.

  12. The March meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 4, at the public library meeting room at 6PM.
