USA Triathlon Board of Directors adopt “age as of Dec. 31” racing policy

The age group of a participant will be determined by age on Dec. 31 of the event year, not by age on race day.

For example:

If you turn 40 years old in November of 2006, you will race and be ranked in the 40-44 age group for the entire 2006 season.

If you turn 25 years old in July of 2006, you will race and be ranked in the 25-29 age group for the entire 2006 season.

Rule 3.2a and all other corresponding rules will be modified by the Commissioner of Officials to account for this change.

Reduced Youth Membership Fee

USA Triathlon is excited to announce that in 2006, the annual membership fee for youth triathletes (age 7-17) will be reduced to $5. Youth annual memberships will be required for a youth triathlete to participate in any USAT sanctioned event.

USAT sees this as a positive step toward increasing youth interest in multi-sport, as we have exciting new developments for youth members of USA Triathlon. Youth members will receive a fun keychain in their membership packet along with a durable membership card and a version of their card that can be kept on the key chain. USAT will be working to create a youth focus in its membership magazine and will dedicate a section of its new web site to youth.

USAT will keep youth members informed about multi-sport, and aid in the development of young athletes. We hope to foster a strong foundation with youth members who will become the future of USAT. We are striving to simplify the procedures for families to participate in triathlons together, and to build triathlon as a family sport.

A major benefit for parents is that they will not be required to attend every race registration to sign their child’s waiver. They will sign up their child ONE TIME for a low membership fee of $5 at the beginning of the year, and youth triathletes will be eligible to compete in all triathlons for the remainder of their annual membership.

Please direct all questions regarding this change to Membership Services at membership@usatriathlon.org or 719-955-2807.

USA Triathlon Grand Prix Events Unveiled

2006 will launch the USAT Grand Prix Series.  The aim of the Series is to showcase a selection of the best USAT sanctioned events and to give each race the opportunity to exhibit its individual characteristics on a National stage.  The races in the Series were selected based on strict criteria that included sanctioning compliance, safety, quality and athlete support.  Each year USAT will select Grand Prix events based on their previous year’s evaluation. This will allow each race to showcase their individual characteristics on a National stage.

Grand Prix events selected for 2006 can be found by clicking here: http://www.usatriathlon.org/Events/2006_Grand_Prix/GP_Home.htm

USAT Congress

USAT Congress is an opportunity for all of the various branches and constituents of the organization to come together and gain a better understanding of how they interconnect.

The 2006 USAT Congress will be held Jan. 12-16 at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort in Colorado Springs, Colo., in conjunction with several other USAT events.

The 2006 USAT Congress will form the umbrella under which these events will fall:

• Race Director Conference
• Level 1 Coaching Clinic
• Annual Regional Presidents Meeting
• Annual Regional Athlete Development Coordinator’s Meeting (RADC’s)
• Annual Officials Meeting

Having all of these different USAT groups converge in one location will provide an unrivaled opportunity for all involved to enhance existing relationships, forge new relationships, share ideas and above all, continue to “fuel the multi-sport lifestyle.”
