February Meeting Recap
Our first regular meeting at the new location, the Socorro Public
Library meeting room, was a busy one. We discussed plans for the
Shelter Shuffle, Relay for Life, Triathlon, and Fat Tire
Fiesta. President Robert Abernathy is also planning two new events
for the spring, including a new handicap series, and a mountain
bike "picture rally". See all the details in the minutes.

Spring Handicap Series Announced
SSR will be holding another running handicap series this spring,
starting on Thursday, February 20th. The first race
will be a 5K, while the remaining three will be 10K's. All the
races will be held before the NM Tech spring semester completes,
and the exact time, location, and other details will follow.

Take the Bike Coalition of NM Survey
The Bike Coalition of New
Mexico is an organization of cyclists chartered to concentrate
on political advocacy issues. They are currently taking a survey
on their web site about your cycling habits and cycling conditions
in your area. The results of this survey will be used to construct
and prioritize a list of projects and concerns for them to present
to local and state representatives.

Singletrack Maintenance Day Set For March 1st
The date is March 1, not March 8, as previously advertised here!
If you've been running or riding on the Socorro Singletrack out
west of town lately, you can tell it's been a long time since
anyone has made an effort to maintain it. In particular, there are
places where the track has been eroded by rain and travel to the
point where new tracks are being made around the damage. A little
maintenance on those areas would help to restore the original path,
and it would help to keep our impact on the area to a minimum.
Brad Cromey's Extreme Cycling class and SSR will be teaming up on
Saturday, March 1st, for what will turn out to be a hard
day of work on the track. That work will mainly involve redirecting
water flow by digging trenches in the areas that are damaged.
Plans are being finalized at this time, but it's likely that we'll
start early in the morning. Skip your long Saturday workout for
this alternative; it's long overdue, and if you use the singletrack
at all, you'll appreciate the results. More details will be
announced here as the date approaches.
