2003 Statewide Race Calendar

Striders, Riders, and Hash House Harriers ???

A large part of the April meeting was devoted to the topic of starting a Hash House Harrier group in Socorro. From www.half-mind.com:

Hashing . . . it's a mixture of athleticism and sociability, hedonism and hard work; a refreshing break from the nine-to-five routine. Hashing is an exhilaratingly fun combination of running, orienteering, and partying, where bands of harriers and harriettes chase hares on eight-to-ten kilometer-long trails through town, country, jungle, and desert, all in search of exercise, camaraderie, and good times.

If you're interested, check out the web site for tons of information. (This also involves a bit of drinking...)

With a lot of help from Karl Frisch ("Papa Don't Preach"), we're going to have our first hash on Thursday, April 17th, starting from Robert Abernathy's house at 903 School of Mines Road. For this first hash, Karl will be laying the trail, and we'll be trying to follow it. We'll start the party at Robert's at 6:00PM, and finish the party at the end of the trail. Bring your own beer or soft drink!

SSR Pulls Out Of Relay For Life

SSR decided to pull itself out of the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life at the April meeting. It was becoming apparent that we could not field a team for the 18-hour relay itself without a lot more people becoming involved, and there didn't seem to be a lot of interest outside of a core group of seven or eight members.

Over the last two years, SSR has raised approximately $5000 for the ACS through entries at races and through individual donations. Former member and cancer survivor Cathy Plummer was the original team captain in 2000 and was a inspiration for her team members. In 2001 we joined with the Trex Enterprises team and continued our successful fund-raising under more difficult economic conditions.

Members who wish to participate in the 2003 Relay For Life should contact one of the following teams, or contact the event organizer, Clara Apodaca.

Mountain Bike Picture Rally On May 10

The date for this event has changed from 5/3 to 5/10
Robert Abernathy is planning a fun, family-oriented, event for May 10th, a "Mountain Bike Picture Rally." The picture rally concept is based on the same sort of event for car or motorcycle clubs, where you're given a set of numbered photos, and you attempt to visit each place where a photo was taken. In our case, each photo may contain a different view of M Mountain, and you'll be following trails and streets in the Socorro area, until you arrive at the party at the end. More details on what to bring and where to meet will be coming on this web site.

MVTC Triathlon Forms Available

The Mesilla Valley Triathlon Club Triathlon, a 5K/25K/500m triathlon held in Las Cruces, will be held on Sunday, April 27th. Robert's been trying to obtain entry forms for a while, but the race organizers hadn't prepared them until last week. We've scanned the entry form and put it online for your convenience. This will be a USA Triathlon race, and so you'll need your USAT card or an additional $9 for a one-day membership. Race-day registration is available for an additional $5 fee.

If you can't download the form, call Genia Shepan of MVTC at (505) 524-7824. Genia and Don Shepan and the rest of MVTC always put on a fun race; we'll see you in Cruces!

Hello Duathletes and Triathletes! This year's Defined Fitness Duathlon was selected as the 2003 Rocky Mountain Regional Duathlon Championship. This means the Defined Fitness Duathlon is Bigger and Better. The duathlon course will be GPS accurate and will consist of a challenging 5k run with 30k bike of rolling hills, finishing with the same challenging 5k run. Proceeds from the race go to support the Rio Rancho High School Mountain Bike Team, and Tri-Sport Junior Triathlon Development Team.
