5/24/2002 - Socorro Chile Harvest Triathlon
Registration for the Socorro Chile Harvest Triathlon (formerly the
Socorro Sprint Triathlon) has begun. The event name change reflects the
new event order: swim 400m/bike 20K/run 5K. The swim start will be
seeded according to an estimated 400 meter swim time you will provide
when you register, with the fastest swimmers going first. Race-day
entries will be seeded in a later wave.

- Congratulations everyone on a great race!
- 8/7/2002 - Nearing 200 entries in the triathlon!
- We are nearing 200 entries in the triathlon, and so we will probably run out of the embroidered running caps. Get your entry in early; you will get a small discount if you don't get a cap, but if you wait until race day, you will be starting after the 200 preregistered people start, and nobody wants that.

- 7/8/2002 - There will be a triathlon committee meeting at 6PM on Wednesday July 10 at the Chamber of Commerce office. Here is a prelimary summary of volunteer instructions.
- 7/8/2002 - July meeting minutes are posted.
- 6/17/2002 - USAT Sanctioning for Chile Harvest Triathlon
- AIG, the insurer of last year's triathlon, is longer providing event liability insurance. Our second choice for event liability insurance is through USA Triathlon, and therefore, we have obtained USAT sanctioning for the Socorro Chile Harvest Triathlon. The entry fee has changed to reflect the one-day USAT membership fee of $7 for non-USAT members.
We're also proud to announce the introduction of ChampionChip timing for
the Chile Harvest Triathlon. We've found enough sponsorship to offset
the increased costs due to the electronic timing, and so we've been able
to keep the registration fee the same as last year, $30. The fee goes up
to $35 on August 4th, and then to $40 for race-day registration.
We're also able to bring back the popular marathon caps from the 2000
race, and we'll be presenting a better quality award for the top
finishers in each category.
Visit http://www.sdc.org/ssr/chile for complete race information, online
registration through active.com, and downloadable registration forms.

3/6/2002 - SSR to combine with Trex for Relay for Life
Our Relay For Life squad will combine with Fred Yarger's
former team, Trex Enterprises. Trex will have trouble
finding enough people this year, and Camille Scelzi, their
leader, and her husband, Mark Bottjer, have been extremely
helpful at SSR events in the past. Fred is signing people up
for the relay; as last year, it costs a $10 donation to sign
up for the relay itself. Fred is also taking any donations
you might like to make.
3/6/2002 - SSR adopts Sedillo Hill
SSR will adopt a section of US highway 60 between

decision on a section of highway to adopt, organization for the
Bosque run on February 10th, and a report on the recent Relay for Life captain's meeting. If you've got something I've forgotten or
something you'd like to add to the agenda, please let me know ahead of

SSR will be organizing a club run from the San Marcial turnoff on NM
Hwy 1 to the Bosque del Apache visitor center on Sunday, February
10th, at 3:00 PM. This will be much like the Crusin' With The Cranes
15K, except it's not a race. In fact, this is still in the formative
stages, so if you have ideas, please let me know. I already know that
we'll be looking for vehicles to carry runners to the start, so please
volunteer to lend a hand with transportation if you can.

Society's Relay for Life this year. This is a fundraising event
for the ACS which involves the whole community. The first captain's
meeting is set for Saturday, January 19th, at 11am at Macey center.
Anyone is welcome to attend. The Relay for Life will be held May 31st
through June 1st.
1/10/2002 - Ad postings
I (Matt Perini) occasionally receive offers via e-mail that are designed for clubs and members.
I think SSR club members should be able to see these advertisements and
decide for themselves. So, from now on, I will post advertisements at
the web site under Items For Sale, but I won't claim any
responsibility for the validity of the offers.
1/10/2002 - Afternoon runs in store starting February
Liz Alvarez will also be starting a regular
weekday run starting at the high school at 5:15 PM, once there's enough
late afternoon daylight. This will probably start the first Thursday in
February, but stay tuned.

director for the Cruisin' With The Cranes 15K race in
February. Too many higher priority things are taking up my
time this winter. As a result, the race has been canceled.
11/9/2001 - Southwest Challenge Series Results
Congratulations to Christian Krueger for winning the elite
division in the Southwest Challenge Series. To do this, he had to have
the best placings at 8 or more SWCS events against some of the
Southwest's best triathletes. The only other SSR member to place was
E.P. Higgs, who won third place in the Clydesdale division, against 6
qualifiers. View the complete results at the Southwest Triathlon Club web site.
11/6/2001 - The Polar Bear Triathlon is on!
The web site maintained by WSMR's Bell Gym, says that the race will go on as scheduled. That is, December 8th, 2001. Please remember to bring the following to get access to the base:

10/24/2001 - New run announced in ABQ
A representative of the Albquerque Road Runners club
called tonight to let us know that there will be a race this
Saturday in Albuquerque. The race will start at the SIPI
campus on Coors (south of Paseo del Norte). The women's run
is a 5K, starting at 9AM, and the men's run is an 8K,
starting at 9:45. Both runs will be cross-country. The cost
is $5, and they say that the awards will be Acoma
hand-crafted pottery. Sounds neat. Call Mr. Daney at
256-7236 for more information.

a nice cookout at the top. Good fun, hard climb.
10/24/2001 - Misprint in newsletter

Sunday morning run listed for 7AM. That is not correct. The
Sunday run will be at 8AM until the weather gets too warm

It appears that we may be going all the way to the Arizona border, and that'll require 30 people if each runs five miles. The police will provide support vans. Please volunteer: call 838-1610 or mail Matt
