2003 Statewide Race Calendar

Gonna Hash Some More

The first known hash in Socorro was, simply, a lot of fun. After Papa laid a "dead" trail, we started out from Robert's home with Christian, Laura, Matt, Cathy, Robert. With a lot of help from Papa we followed the trail across Tech, down Lopezville Road, across the brush to El Camino Real, finally finding beer in the parking lot of Sedillo Park. That doesn't count the numerous dead ends along the way. Then it was back to Robert's place and some refreshment. We decided we'd like to do it again, and so we'll set a date and place for the next hash at the May meeting.

Big Wins At MVTC Triathlon

The Mesilla Valley Triathlon Club Triathlon, a 5K/25K/500m triathlon held in Las Cruces, was held on Sunday, April 27th. Between SSR members and Laura's triathlon class, there were 15 triathletes with Socorro ties in the race. In an amazing feat, we garnered 7 first place medals: Female Elite and Overall Female for Terry Moore, and age group wins for Laura Wilcox, Cathy Perini, Catharine Stewart-Roache, Pat Roache, and St`even Montoya. Barry Field, Triclub NM president and member of every other club including SSR, took a first place in his age group. Michael Montoya was second overall, and Alyssa Higgs was third in her age group. Complete results will be available soon.

Regular Meeting Set For May 6

It's time for another SSR meeting! This time we'll have a guest speaker (see related article), Greg White, of the NM Highway Department. We'll also set a date for the next hash. If you've got other items for the agenda, please contact Matt Perini.

NM Highway Department Representative To Speak

Mr. Greg White, the New Mexico State Highway And Transportation Department representative on the state's Bicycle, Pedestrian, and Equestrian committee, is coming to Socorro and talk to SSR about cycling issues for the SSR meeting on May 6th. This is a good opportunity for you to make your voice heard about highway issue, bicycle commuting, or anything else you'd like to happen within the highway department.

Announcing the Defined Fitness Duathlon

Submitted by Brandon Boucher of Tri-Sport Training
Hello Duathletes and Triathletes! This year's Defined Fitness Duathlon was selected as the 2003 Rocky Mountain Regional Duathlon Championship. This means the Defined Fitness Duathlon is Bigger and Better. The duathlon course will be GPS accurate and will consist of a challenging 5k run with 30k bike of rolling hills, finishing with the same challenging 5k run. Proceeds from the race go to support the Rio Rancho High School Mountain Bike Team, and Tri-Sport Junior Triathlon Development Team.

You can register online at our web page, http://www.tri-sporttraining.com. Look for the 2003 Defined Fitness Duathlon link on the left side of the page. You can also down load a registration form and mail it in. This year's early registration ends on April 26th 2003. One day licenses apply and please, no race day transfers. Mail in registration forms must be postmarked by April 27; after the 27th late fee of $10 applies. The race results will be posted at TransitionTimes.com. Packet pick-up is morning of the race and on May 3rd at the Rio Rancho Defined Fitness between 1pm-4pm including the much anticipated free race gift.

After race festivities include drawing from our sponsors, Fleet Feet, La Ti Da coffee, free Dion's pizza, Cycle Works, and post race massages. We are also hosting a post race tri-gear swap meet until 2 pm. Bring your old gear, new gear, bikes, clothing, etc. to sell and swap. We'll provide the tables - you provide the gear and prices for the first tri-gear swap meet. Additionally, any gear left can be donated to the Tri-sport junior triathlon program.

Mountain Bike Picture Rally On May 10

The date for this event has changed from 5/3 to 5/10
Robert Abernathy is planning a fun, family-oriented, event for May 10th, a "Mountain Bike Picture Rally." The picture rally concept is based on the same sort of event for car or motorcycle clubs, where you're given a set of numbered photos, and you attempt to visit each place where a photo was taken. In our case, each photo may contain a different view of M Mountain, and you'll be following trails and streets in the Socorro area, until you arrive at the party at the end. More details on what to bring and where to meet will be coming on this web site.
