The Tour of Socorro is back for another go, as races #2 and #3 in the 2008 New Mexico Off-Road Series!
The two Tour races flip each year, so for 2008 the first day will be the popular Cerrillos del Coyote cross-country race. The course is mostly unchanged from last year. The end result is a loop course utilizing the BLM's Quebradas Backcountry Byway, rough two-track road, and a bunch of new and old singletrack.
The second day will be the South Baldy Hill Climb, an approximately 8-mile course that climbs nearly 4000 feet. The road is a smooth, dirt forest service road from Water Canyon Campground to 10700' South Baldy Peak in the Magdalena Range, West of Socorro. For those who've been around for a while, we used to hold this race as part of the Socorro Fat Tire Fiesta.
For the Omnium only, there will be a cash and merchandise purse for the all classes - see Awards. Points will be awarded by finishing order in each race, and for finishing both races. NMORS will treat the races separately.
An omnium is a set of races in which riders compete for points in each event, and final placings are determined by total points from all events. Bonus points are awarded for completing more than one event. An omnium differs from a stage race in that riders don't have to finish all races in order to be eligible for prizes. The bonus points awarded for finishing multiple races, however, give those racers an advantage in the overall scoring.
The Tour of Socorro is an omnium combination of the South Baldy Hill Climb and the Cerrillos del Coyote. For a detailed description of how scoring will be done, and how the omnium will figure into the overall NMORS standings, please see the Awards section.
Riders racing in Expert and higher categories need to have USAC-Mountain annual licenses. We will have USAC-Mountain annual license forms at registration.
The Chief Referee reserves the right to split or combine races based on attendance. Exemptions, upgrades, and downgrades must be approved by the Chief Referee prior to the start of the race.
Omnium prizes will be awarded in USAC-Mountain racing classes Pro (+Semi-Pro), Expert, Sport, and Beginner, plus the addition NMORS Single-Speed class. Cash will be awarded to the top three winners in each Pro class and each Expert age categories, as detailed below. Schwag will be awarded to the top three winners in Sport and Beginner age categories, and in the Singlespeed class.

All races are sanctioned by USA Cycling. All USAC-Mountain rules and regulations apply.
All races will be held rain or shine, but may be cancelled or rescheduled at the discretion of the chief official in the event of unsfe weather conditions.
CPSC approved hard-shell helmets must be worn at all times, by all participants. Failure to comply with this rule will result in immediate disqualification.
Participants under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian present at the event.
It is the responsibility of the participant to know the course.
It is the responsibility of the participant to follow all applicable traffic rules. Warning: These races take place on public roads, and cars may or may not yield to you!
Anyone guilty of cutting off other participants, or of causing an accident by overly agressive or irresponsible behavior will be disqualified.
Race entry numbers must be displayed on the front of the bike, and secured so as to remain visible at speed.
All bikes must pass inspection by the chief official (or official delegate) prior to the competition:
Mechanically unsound or unsafe bicycles will be disqualified. What constitutes "unsound" and "unsafe" is at the discretion of the chief official.
"Aero" bars of any kind (e.g., any forward-facing bar of length greater than a bar-end) are not allowed, due to the danger they pose to you and the riders around you.
Though you may run any style of bike you wish, we strongly discourage using any bike with less than 1" tires. The race route can get quite rough, and may well destroy a bike intended for smoother surfaces. If you insist on riding such an unsuitable bike in the race, you do so at your own risk.
