Upcoming Races and Local Race Results

MVTC Triathlon

Four current Socorro residents enjoyed a perfect day for multisport in Las Cruces on the 17th. Way to go Julie and Sandy for winning your AG's! Not sure of Robert's placing, but we will update it and give specific times when they get posted. Terry Moore did great again in winning overall and Setven Montoya's relay group won first in their division.

  • Ephraim Ford 2nd/8 1:21 (25-29)

  • Julie Ford 1st/9 1:26 (30-34)

  • Sandy Nolen 1st/10 1:17 (40-44)

  • Robert Abernathy ?? (40-44)

1st Annual Run For Your Life 5k

2005 Run For Your Life 5k and Walk

We had a great turnout for the run on Saturday, the 16th, including a few new faces. The 5k course was familiar to those who had done the Socorro tri and everyone liked the cooling breeze. A big thanks needs to go to the SSR volunteers and the Rotary volunteers. Without their help this would have been much harder to accomplish.

  • Ephraim Ford 26 1st Male 0:20:51

  • Jason Wurnig 34 2nd Male 0:21:31

  • Shingo Date 35 3rd Male 0:21:44

Ironman Arizona

At least one SSR member survived the first annual Ironman Arizona in Tempe - they braved the heat, twisty course, and the amazing physical requirements for such a race. Congratulations E.P.!

  • HIGGS, E.P. in a total of 15:49:02, 267/290 in M40-44, with splits of 1:23:00 swim / 11:11 T1 /6:44:33 Bike / 9:26 T2/7:20:54 Run

Bataan Memorial Death March

Three SSR members made the trek down to White Sands Missile Range recently to enter the 2005 Bataan Memorial Death March. Your intrepid president, Robert Abernathy, in a show of false bravado, managed to overstrain his knees by mile 14 and was reduced to slogging out the course at a walking pace. Erika and Katrina Burleigh, running a more sensible pace, were able to run(!) by at the end and finish 24th and 25th place respectively in the light female category. Robert managed to hobble rather weakly across the finish line to take 69th place in the light male over forty category just a few minutes later. (In case you haven't figured it out, the light category refer to the weight carried by the participant.)

  • Erika Burleigh 5:30:32 24th of 238 Light female

  • Katrina Burleigh 5:30:34 25th of 238 Light female

  • Robert Abernathy 5:31:23 69th of 301 Light male over forty

Magdalena Ridge Road Closure

From the official web site for the Magdalena Ridge Observatory:

"Intensive road maintenance and repair, including cleaning out culverts, will commence on March 21. This is in preparation for the Single Telescope construction which will start on or about April 18. In consultation with Dennis Aldrich of the USFS, Forest Road 235 will be closed to the public on work days from March 21 until further notice. Work days currently are Monday through Friday, 6:00 am to 5:00 pm. The road is open during non-work hours and on weekends. In mid-April work days may be extended to six days per week, and hours may change. This site will be updated accordingly.

According to Rob Selina, site engineer for the Magdalena Ridge Observatory, the guards were misinformed and work days do not include weekends, so the road is closed only on weekdays from 6 AM to 5 PM, and some Saturdays for the next 3 years and possibly much longer, depending upon how long the construction lasts.

The Next Hash will be on the 5th of May

We will meet at the new Socorro Springs Brewery at 6PM and in honor of Cinco de Mayo you MUST wear something sufficiently Cinco de Mayo-ish! Yes, nothing but a sombrero would suffice. This will be a wilderness hash and a flashlight will still be needed.

Read one of the Hash Trash reviews from March 2005's St. Patty's Hash, February 2005's Valentine's Day Hash, January 2005's Hash, December 2004 Red Dress Run, November 2004's, 2004's Halloween Hash, September, August, July, June, May, April, March 2004, February 2004, January 2004, December 2003's Red Dress Run Report, November 2003, or October 2003 Halloween Hash to see what hashing's about.
