Upcoming Races and Local Race Results
Las Vegas Olympic Triathlon
Yowsers. What a tough race and one of us wasn't quite ready (me!). The weather was beautiful and
the course was great. Christian had another great showing, Cathy placed, and Matt, Robert, and I
rounded out the soloists from Socorro while Julie and Catharine also had kicked butt in the run and bike legs for their relay team.
The complete Vegas results are HERE.

Shingo's Sandia Peak Race Report
I took part in 7.2 miles run part of the Sandia Peak Challenge,
which starts from the Sandia Peak Ski Area and ends at the Sandia
Crest, and completed the run with a posted time of 1 hour 17 minutes 12
seconds (10minutes 43seconds / mile pace), coming 22nd out of 58 participants
and 21st out of 38 male participants. It was a tough run (especially the
first mile), running in a narrow dirt trail in the woods and in the grass field, with numerous switch-backs
and no mile marks, but it was a good high-altitude training for me, and I was glad that I took part in the
race. Results are here.
Roadrunner Triathlon
Robert went nuts and did the Roadrunner the day before the Las Vegas tri. He had a great time and
finished 6/7 in his AG, with a time of 2:11:44. Complete results here but let's not try to support his habit.
Shingo's Rancho Viejo Run Race Report
I completed the 10K race with the recorded time of 45 minutes 59 seconds (7 minutes 24 seconds / mile pace)
as posted in the result board, finishing 22nd out of 112 participants (for the 10K event)
(19th out of 61 male participants; 3rd out of 4 participants in male 35-39 age group).
It was a nice run in a not-so-hot early morning (7am start for 10K) with small ups-and-downs in paved walking paths
in Rancho Viejo Community Park and small roads in surrounding housing areas. There was a large turn-out,
including the participants in the 5K event and the Kid's race event. There were a fair number of notable overseas
athletes such as Mbarak Hussein, who have attended the event. Full results are here.
Boulder Peak Triathlon
Mike Montoya & Cathy Pfeifer participated in the grueling and, sadly to say, deadly Boulder Peak Tri last weekend.
Both completed it quite well and Mike placed in the top 50 of a field including 15 elites, relays, and other stiff competition!
Final results can be found here.
Mike 5th/163 - 23:37 - 1:06 - 1:07:24 - 01:04 - 42:08 - 02:15:12
Cathy 34th/67 - 33:31 - 02:21 - 01:30:47 - 01:28 - 57:46 - 03:05:54
Bottomless Lake Triathlon
Another good showing by some Striders & Riders. Christian, sporting a shaved head, nearly beat out
Perry Tolles for first! Full results are HERE.

Magdalena Ridge Road Closure
From the official web site for the
Magdalena Ridge Observatory:
"Intensive road maintenance and repair, including cleaning out culverts, will commence on March 21. This is in preparation for the Single Telescope construction which will start on or about April 18. In consultation with Dennis Aldrich of the USFS, Forest Road 235 will be closed to the public on work days from March 21 until further notice. Work days currently are Monday through Friday, 6:00 am to 5:00 pm. The road is open during non-work hours and on weekends. In mid-April work days may be extended to six days per week, and hours may change. This site will be updated accordingly.
According to Rob Selina, site engineer for the Magdalena Ridge Observatory, the guards were misinformed and work days do not include weekends, so the road is closed only on weekdays from 6 AM to 5 PM, and some Saturdays for the next 3 years and possibly much longer, depending upon how long the construction lasts.
